Frequently Asked Questions

FOR ANG-5101 AND ANG-5102 CAN A STUDENT CHOOSE THE SUBJECT OF THE EVALUATION?

The adult learner may not choose the version of their evaluation. However, they must select one of the situations in the evaluation version they were assigned.

WHAT MATERIAL (I.E. TASK 2, NOTES PAGE, DICTIONARY) IS PERMITTED DURING THE NOTES REVIEW PART OF SECTION 2 OF THE EVALUATION IN ANG-4101, ANG-4102, ANG-5101, ANG-5102?

For the courses ANG-4101, ANG-4102, ANG-5101 and ANG-5102, the Instructions for Administering the Examination specify that for the revision period, the teacher must provide the adult learner with a copy of Task 2 and the Notes pages from the Adult’s Booklet. However, for the oral interaction, the adult learner may only use the Notes pages as a reference throughout the interaction.

CAN A TEACHER OTHER THAN THE STUDENT’S TEACHER DO THE INTERACTION WITH THE STUDENT?

The teacher doing the oral interaction is preferably the regular English as a Second Language teacher of the adult learner. Under certain circumstances, another ESL teacher may administer the oral interaction.

MUST THE ORAL INTERACTION BETWEEN THE STUDENT AND TEACHER IMMEDIATELY FOLLOW THE NOTES REVIEW?

Yes, the oral interaction must immediately follow the review period.

CAN WE DO THE REVIEW PERIOD AND ORAL INTERACTION IN THE CLASSROOM IN THE PRESENCE OF OTHER STUDENTS?

No. The review period and oral interaction are held in an isolated location within the adult education centre. Isolated means the confidentiality of the examination is preserved, the potential for disruptions is minimized and the examination is not administered in the presence of other adult learners.

FOR THE NOTES REVIEW PERIOD IN DBE EVALUATIONS, IS ISOLATING A STUDENT ACCEPTABLE OR DOES THE STUDENT NEED TO BE SUPERVISED?

The adult learner must be supervised during the review period; however, supervision does not need to be by an English as a Second Language teacher.

SHOULD ORAL INTERACTIONS BE RECORDED AND CONSERVED?

In the following DBE courses, ANG-3101, ANG-3102, ANG-4101, ANG-4102, ANG-5101, and ANG-5102, the oral interaction represents 100% of the final grade. It is highly recommended to record all oral interactions. The teacher is required to be an integral part of the interaction and recording the interaction allows the teacher to listen afterwards and evaluate more precisely the student’s production. The procedure for saving recordings of the oral interactions should be included in the centre’s Standards and Procedures (Normes et modalités). Confidentiality with regards to these recordings must be respected at all times.

WHAT COUNTS AS A SMALL WORD WHEN COUNTING WORDS IN A STUDENT’S TEXT FOR ANG-4103 AND ANG-5103?

Small words include articles and conjunctions such as a, an, the, and, but, if, or and so. As a general rule, small words account for 10% of a text.

IN THE ANG-4102-1 EVALUATION, DO THE TWO STORIES (STORY FROM THE EVALUATION AND STUDENT’S PERSONAL STORY) HAVE TO BE CONNECTED?

Yes. The ‘Examination Content’ section of the DED reads:
During Section 1, the adult learner:

• Reads short narrative texts.
• Selects one of the texts as a springboard for discussion during the Interaction Section.
• Uses prompts provided in the Adult’s Booklet to construct the meaning of texts and to choose a story or personal experience that can be linked to the chosen text.

If these directives are not followed, a student could practice and memorize any story at all before the exam and recount it. We want to see how the student can create natural links to subjects of conversation.

ARE TEACHERS ALLOWED TO CONSULT THE EVALUATIONS?

ESL teachers can consult the oral interaction examinations prior to the exam in order to prepare the oral interaction with the adult learner. Furthermore, teachers must be provided with all relevant exam documents for the oral interaction, including the Instructions for Administering the Examination which contains important exam information for the oral interaction.

WHERE CAN I FIND THE MINISTRY'S EXAM FEEDBACK FORM?

You can find the Examination Feedback Form in the document section of the MEQ’s website.

IN ANG-5101 AND ANG-5102, DO STUDENTS COMPLETE THE PREPARATION BOOKLET DURING OR OUTSIDE CLASS?

Both. The Preparation Booklet is given to students 4-6 hours before the end of their course. Students may use a wide variety of resources to complete their preparation. In order to fully utilize these resources, a student may need to work both during and outside of class time.
